My name is Melissa Montgomery and I have been an independently licensed therapist for over (gasp) thirty years.
Often when I meet a new client for the first time, similar questions and comments come up. I am convinced this is because most humans want/fear/question similar things. These questions and others are expected and welcomed!
#1. Am I crazy?
No, the ability to ask that indicates to me you are suffering, and may have people throwing that out as a possibility, but it is unlikely. It also tells me you have something to resolve, remove, or make peace with.
#2. How does this work?
We spend time getting to know your history, your needs and issues that need some resolution. Then we make a plan and see what works. The plan is collaborative; combining my therapy knowledge and your knowledge about you. We do it together.
#3. I have something I don’t want to tell you right now, is that ok?
Absolutely. Sharing your story with me is a privilege I take seriously. You may share it at your pace or consider keeping something private. As the relationship becomes more comfortable, previously unspoken things sometimes feel ok to let out in a safe space.
#4. What if I don’t feel like this is a good fit and want to try another therapist?
Bravo-this is the first step to accepting your instincts! At Greentree Counseling we instruct clients to talk to the administrative staff and they can change clinicians without any awkwardness. It is not a popularity contest-our job is to support you, which can mean trying someone different. We get it!
The most important thing to remember is you did it! You saw something that you wanted help with and you made the call. That was so brave. Keep going!
I look forward to meeting you on that very brave day🌸
